Republican Presidential Hopefuls Tell SBA List: Defund Planned Parenthood | SBA-List
"This week, the Susan B. Anthony List contacted Republican presidential hopefuls to ask them where they stand on defunding Planned Parenthood. Several hopefuls, including Rep. Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and Sen. Rick Santorum, had already publicly spoken out in support of defunding America's largest abortion provider, which receives a third of its income from taxpayers' pockets.Gov. Haley Barbour, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. Sarah Palin, and  Gov. Tim Pawlenty also provided statements to the SBA List."
Apparently, Gov. Romney did not respond to SBA's request for a statement.

If you can spare five minutes, it's worth listening to Rep. Mike Pence's speech on the House floor about the "Pence Amendment" which would end federal funding of Planned Parenthood.  A few disturbing facts:

"In 2009, the group made only 977 adoption referrals and cared for only 7,021 prenatal clients, but performed a record 332,278 abortions. In other words, a pregnant woman entering a Planned Parenthood clinic was 42 times more likely to have an abortion than to either receive prenatal care or be referred for adoption. Planned Parenthood recently made plain the centrality of abortion to its mission by mandating that every one of its affiliates have at least one clinic that performs abortions within the next two years…
According to its most recent annual report, the organization raked in $1.1 billion in total revenue. Of that amount, $363.2 million came from taxpayers in the form of government grants and contracts."

  • The US Government subsidizes the production of corn-based ethanol, as a substitute/supplement for gasoline.
  • To maintain a demand, the US Government pushes for standard gasoline mixtures containing 10% ethanol.  This will supposedly decrease pollution and increase efficiency.
  • Corn is then turned into ethanol wholesale.
  • Corn-based food prices rise.  That includes critters that eat corn, by the way.
  • This results in higher food prices domestically.  This decreases efficiency.
  • This also results in more food insecurity globally.
  • Corn-based ethanol, being subsidized, crowds out other ethanol fuels.  If this is confusing: please, reference Gresham’s Law, and generalize from its specific example.
  • Ethanol, being less energy efficient than gasoline - which is why we weren’t using it to begin with - ends up causing effective inflation, as it costs more to go the same distance in your car.  This also increases pollution.
  • In short, 10% ethanol gasoline results in more pollution and less efficiency.
  • Therefore, the only solution… is to raise the amount of ethanol in gasoline to 15%.

We are not digging ourselves out of this mess anytime soon!  What a disaster!

Or maybe we should all move to N. Dakota (HT: Glenna)...

    • Lowest unemployment rate among the 50 states. North Dakota's 3.8 percent unemployment rate is less than half the national rate.
    • Statewide GDP growth of 3.9 percent ranked third in the nation in 2009 behind Oklahoma and Wyoming (2010's figures are not yet available.)
    • Best job growth last year. A Gallup survey reported that North Dakota businesses had the best ratio of hiring to firing among the 50 states.
    • Stable housing market
    • Low violent crime rate. The incidence of violent crime per 100,000 residents in North Dakota in 2008 (latest available data) was the fourth lowest in the country and nearly 60 percent lower than the national average.
    • Lowest credit card default rate

    N. Dakota is also ranked as the third happiest state and in order to deal with a recent budget surplus, the state rolled back property and income taxes $400 million! I'd be happy about that!

"Ruling in ACSTO v. Winn today, the United States Supreme upheld Arizona's k-12 scholarship tax credit program. Under this program, individuals receive a tax cut if they donate to a non-profit scholarship fund that gives out private school tuition aid."
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that tax credits Arizonians receive for donations to a state scholarship program could continue because the respondants had not been injured:
"tax credits and governmental expenditures do not both implicate individual taxpayers in sectarian activities. A dissenter whose tax dollars are “extracted and spent” knows that he has in some small measure been made to contribute to an establishment in violation of conscience.... [By contrast,] awarding some citizens a tax credit allows other citizens to retain control over their own funds in accordance with their own consciences."
This is a huge victory for school choice in Arizona and will likely pave the way for similar programs in other states, possibly even Ohio.

The Arizona School Choice Trust  is an innovative program which awards scholarships, currently $5400/year, to low income students to attend the public or private school of their choice.  It is funded by taxpayer's (in effect) designating a portion of their annual tax liability to the program. Individuals can receive dollar-for-dollar tax credits up to $500 per year ($1000/married couples) for donations made to the ASCT.  Corporations can donate up to 100% of their tax liability to the program and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit.

Last year the ASCT awarded  over 600 scholarships to low income children, empowering these families with choices that were previously out of reach.

A few days ago I shared the story of a  dog that was rescued three weeks after the tsunami on a flotilla of wreckage at sea.  More happiness from this story: the dog, Ban, has been reunited with his owner.  She saw the story of his rescue on television and immediately recognized him and sent word to the shelter.  Watch the joyous reunion....

Finally, in case you've been in a cave or away from all media for the past week and haven't seen the Eagle Nest Cam, here you go:

    Live Streaming by Ustream.TV
I have been addicted to this drama, day and night, keeping it up on my computer all the time because I don't want to miss the hatching of the all-important third egg.  Currently there are two hatchlings in the nest and if you've been watching, you'll know that #2 is a bit weaker than it's sibling and #1 is kind of a bully.  The parents have loaded the nest with food stores, including a rabbit, at fish, a crow, a large mammal of some sort (maybe a prairie dog?), and a smaller rodent (maybe a rat).  It's starting to look a little creepy up there.  Yesterday the camera operator zoomed in on a crow that was lurking in the distance, leering at those vulnerable chicks.  Next thing you know, crow is on the menu.  Oh, the drama!

I am amazed by these dutiful parents who are taking turns tending the nest, feeding the hatchlings and incubating the remaining egg 24-7.  Their work will intensify as these hatchlings grow and begin demanding more food and hobbling around the nest, especially if #3 joins the brood.

Google, YouTube Mark April Fools With Fake Viral Videos | The Blaze
In case you missed it yesterday, Google and YouTube were monkeying around a bit to celebrate April Fool's Day.  YouTube created some fake throwback viral videos from 1911 and added an option to "1911" current YouTube videos.

Google announced a new feature called "Google Motion"

If you're a gmail user, you may have noticed this announcement at the top of your gmail home page:

My favorite was a Google job ad for a "Google Autocompleter"

"Are you passionate about helping people? Are you intuitive? Do you often feel like you know what your friends and family are thinking and can finish their thoughts before they can? Are you an incredibly fast Google searcher? Like, so fast that you can do 20 searches before your mom does 1?"

    ~~~~~
    Also released on April Fool's Day was a spoof Obama campaign video.  The fine print says "Paid for by the Republican Senatorial Campaign. Not actually approved by President Barack Obama."
    ~~~~~

I love these text-to-speech animations....especially when they make a point better than an entire room full of political pundits with PhD's. In this one,  a liberal is trying (unsuccessfully) to defend President Obama's military action in Libya.
"My labradoodle spends more time deliberating where to lie down than Obama spent on bombing Libya."

"Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.
It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees. Is it any wonder that so many states and cities cannot pay their bills?"

So, I'm wondering if we'd be better off  just scrapping all these high school college-prep programs and instead started teaching students how to fill out government job applications.   Seems promising, right?

Abortion pills can cause blood clots  - Thaindian News
Just as the FDA is clearing the way to serve up the abortion pill to minor girls without parental input and without a doctor's prescription, we find out that it's even more dangerous than first reported:
"A vascular disease called deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is on the rise and doctors say it has a lot to do with the increase in sales of over-the-counter contraceptive pills.
“DVT is a serious vascular disease where the blood clot is formed in the deep veins that are the blood carriers, usually in the leg,” added Parakh.
With aggressive advertising of over-the-counter contraceptive pills, cases of DVT have also seen a noticeable rise in recent times, believe experts.
According to statistics by the government, the sale of nearly 8.2 million over-the-counter emergency contraceptive pills was reported in 2009, a 250 percent increase over 2008. The pills claim to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex."
A girl can't get her ears pierced or take a Tylenol at school without parental permission, but the FDA thinks she should be able to take a powerful hormone that she can buy over the counter at the pharmacy along with her bubble gum and lip gloss. Brilliant.

    Now for some GOOD news!

The tsunami’s last survivor « Hot Air:
"This wasn’t a rescue mission. After three weeks, they’d long since given up on finding people alive at sea. The coast guard was looking to recover bodies, and even that’s become so hopeless that they may call off the operation after Sunday. But while they were out there scanning the water, something on a floating debris field below them moved. No food, no fresh water — for three weeks. And yet, somehow…"
A fishy tale: It seems almost too good to be true, but this little dog seems to have survived against all odds and was discovered by coastguards floating on a raft at sea

Against all odds: The dog appears to have survived by clinging to a house that had been swept away by the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11

“Some people can debate and caterwaul and say that a no-fly zone is not war, but there will not be many people, in and around the country, who believe that putting U.S. troops on the ground is not war,” Paul says. “I can tell you, absolutely, that I will demand a declaration of war on the Senate floor before any troops set foot in Libya.”
Beyond his constitutional concerns, Paul argues that the Libyan conflict is being waged to support a mostly unknown rebel force. “The question is, who are these people?” he asks. “We know how bad the guy in power is, but do we know that these people are not in favor of radical sharia law? Do we know that they do not think that Israel should be wiped off the map? I am always concerned when we are in favor of people who we know nothing about.” George Will, Pat Buchanan, and Sen. Dick Lugar (R., Ind.), he says, have all raised this important point."

Thousands of Christians Displaced in Ethiopia After Muslim Extremists Torch Churches, Homes - FoxNews.com
"Thousands of Christians have been forced to flee their homes in Western Ethiopia after Muslim extremists set fire to roughly 50 churches and dozens of Christian homes.
At least one Christian has been killed, many more have been injured and anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 have been displaced in the attacks that began March 2 after a Christian in the community of Asendabo was accused of desecrating the Koran."
FreedomWorks launches ‘Diverse Tea’ | The Daily Caller :
"Former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks organization rolled out its Diverse Tea campaign Monday at diverse-tea.com.
FreedomWorks President and CEO Matt Kibbe told The Daily Caller that the program is meant to showcase diversity in the Tea Party movement. The first four members of Diverse Tea highlighted are the Rev. C.L. Bryant, Deneen Borelli, Tito Munoz and Ryan Hecker."
This is an unnecessary distraction from Freedom Works' mission of fiscal responsibility.  The sooner we cease talking about racial divisions and obsessing about skin color, the sooner we will have a color-blind society.  Continuing to focus on it is just feeding the beast of the politics of race and giving fodder to the race baiters.

Poll: Most in U.S., except evangelicals, see no divine sign in disasters - USATODAY.com
"Nearly six in 10 evangelicals believe God can use natural disasters to send messages — nearly twice the number of Catholics (31%) or mainline Protestants (34%). Evangelicals (53%) are also more than twice as likely as the one in five Catholics or mainline Protestants to believe God punishes nations for the sins of some citizens.
The poll found that a majority (56%) of Americans believe God is in control of the earth, but the idea of God employing Mother Nature to dispense judgment (38% of all Americans) or God punishing entire nations for the sins of a few (29%) has less support..
...Nearly half of Americans (44%) say the increased severity of recent natural disasters is evidence of biblical 'end times,' but a larger share (58%) believe it is evidence of climate change. The only religious group more likely to see natural disasters as evidence of 'end times' (67%) than climate change (52%) is white evangelicals...
The article includes this very wise insight:
...This is tragic, but if you ask (why God allows) earthquakes, you have to ask it anytime that people die. We would have to be prophets of God to know that.'
This is such a great point.  Often, when faced with a tragedy of the proportions we see in Japan, we fail to remember that (according to some estimates), 150,000 people die every single day - dwarfing the number killed in the tsunami in Japan.  So the question is not "Why did God send/allow/cause the earthquake?" but "Why do people die?"  The Bible tells us that it started with the first man, Adam:
"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12).
This discussion brought to mind a couple of videos I saw last month (HT: Justin Taylor).  Zac Miller went home to be with the Lord in May, 2010 after a short battle with cancer. He made a video about his journey before he died. His wife followed up with a video of her own journey after his death:

We welcomed Ryan home from Hillsdale College last night.  He sat down for a quick dinner (Bolyard Burgers, on the grill!), unloaded a carload of laundry, and headed off to Bible study with his dad.  He also left me with a reading assignment from his American Heritage Reader, compiled by the Hillsdale College History Faculty.  It's a collection (882 pages) of  important documents and writings from Colonial times thru Reagan.   Ryan was so excited about what he's been learning that he wanted to share it with me, which is music to a homeschooling mom's heart.  My assignment:  "The Great Nation of Futurity" by John Louis O'Sullivan (1813-1895).  It contains this quote about our country:
"We have had patriots to defend our homes, our liberties, but no aspirants to crowns or thrones; nor have the American people ever suffered themselves to be led on by wicked ambition to de-populate the land, to spread desolation far and wide, that a human being might be placed on a seat of supremacy."
Our nation has truly been blessed! In light of what we've seen in the Middle East in recent months and looking across the whole of history, we are indeed unique and exceptional.

Baptist Press - Disaster pushes Japanese beyond secular thinking
...Proud of their secular society, most Japanese are not religious. But in a time of crisis, International Mission Board missionary Gary Fujino says they tend to fall back on an old Japanese expression, 'The god that you depend on in times of crisis.'
'What that means is when things are bad, you will go to the temple and shrine because nothing you've tried thus far worked,' Fujino explains. He notes that, once the crisis is over, no one goes back to the temple or shrine.
Thousands of prayer tablets hung in one-day testify that the crisis in Japan continues to grow and people are trying to find ways to cope...
They really believe that in themselves they have what they need, which makes it very difficult to share the Gospel' Fujino says. 'What we need is for people to be shaken and realize that you need something outside of yourself -- God'...
'I learned in the Kobe earthquake that I needed God. I learned that I don't need material things. My heart opened up,' she says. 'I think God saved me back then because He wants to use me now.'...
...She explains that the Japanese government will take care of things and rebuild houses in a few months, but she can do something even bigger -- introduce people to the God who can rebuild their lives.   'I have a really strong God,' she says. 'I want those people in the disaster to know my God's strength and power.'
Dorsey cannot make it to the disaster zone yet because of radiation fears, not to mention the lack of government permits, but she's doing what she can in Tokyo. From her church just a few miles from the Shinto shrine, she prays for her country. Dorsey's prayers are different than those hanging in the shrine. Hers are not 'wishes' or 'hopes.' She knows her God personally and knows He will provide."

Somehow, I knew this was coming.  The Radiation Network has real-time updates from Gieger counters across the country. The map is refreshed every minute of the day for those who are having trouble sleeping without knowing what the radiation level is.  According to the website, "alert level" is 100 counts per minute (CPM), so it looks like we're in good shape, for now.

It's interesting that Ken Blackwell, Ohio's former Secretary of State received so many votes.  He's a solid conservative who challenged Michael Steele for the GOP Chairmanship a couple years ago.  Considering his name hasn't been in the news much, it's a strong showing.  Jim Jordan has said he plans to stay in the House, where he leads the conservative Republican Study Committee.  It's notable that there are a lot of undecided votes up for grabs.

    They also asked:

Would you describe yourself as very liberal, somewhat liberal, moderate, somewhat

Germany's Eco-Trap: Is Environmentalism Really Working? - SPIEGEL ONLINE
This article in Spiegel Online demonstrates what happens in the headlong rush into ill-conceived environmental policies:

    E10 (ethanol) Fuel:
"Many haven't yet fully realized that E10 is an ecological swindle. People who want to help the environment shouldn't use it. Nine large European environmental associations recently conducted a joint study which concluded that the bottom line impact of the fuel on the environment is negative. Rainforests are being clear-cut in Brazil and Borneo to make room for sugarcane and oil palm cultivation. At the same time there's a shortage of arable land for food production, which is leading to the threat of famine in parts of the world. Last year, the price of grain rose sharply in the global market."
     Recycling:
"Under German law, only 36 percent of plastic rubbish has to be recycled. The remainder can be sold for a profit, for example to plants that burn rubbish to produce heating or power. Such facilities are everywhere in Germany. Municipalities across the country built then in response to a ban on storing garbage in landfills. Indeed, now there are far too many of them in Germany -- and there is a shortage of burnable waste.
The result is that firms are buying up as much plastic waste -- which burns well due to the high quantity of oil in plastics -- as they can get their hands on. Indeed, some companies have even resorted to importing plastic waste to burn -- hardly a contribution to an environmental utopia."
    Water Conservation:
"The Germans are obsessed with saving water. You won't find many countries north of the Sahara that are as water-conscious as Germany. They save water while washing dishes (a modern dishwashing machine uses only six liters per cycle), while going to the toilet (many toilets have a setting that allows only a brief flush), and even when washing their cars....
..."And water conservation in Germany can be harmful -- particularly when it comes to the sewage systems beneath German cities. The lack of waste water flowing through the canalization means that fat, faeces and discarded food aren't getting flushed out enough, and are corroding the walls. To compensate, utilities are forced to pump hundreds of thousands of liters of fresh water through the system to keep it operable..."
    Insulation:
"By rights, the venerable town of Weimar with its beautiful old architecture should be forbidden. None of the buildings meet modern standards of heating insulation. The walls are too thin, the windows aren't properly sealed, the place is a disaster in terms of energy efficiency. Politicians in Berlin have ensure that the situation will soon improve. By 2050, all buildings in Germany must be carbon neutral, according to the government's energy plan presented last year. 'If we take that legislation seriously, we would have to tear down half the town,' says Weimar Mayor Stefan Wolf....
...Across the country, insulating panels are going up on the outside of myriad buildings. With older buildings making up a quarter of the country's housing stock, there seems to be little other choice...
Another problems is that well-insulated buildings don't breathe -- no outside air gets in and CO2 can build up quickly inside as a result. So can mould. Installing air vents can be exorbitant."

    March 18, 2011

Today was a gorgeous spring day in Wayne County, Ohio - the thermometer hit a balmy 61 degrees!  I spent a lot of time in the car today and noted some sure signs of spring:

    • Golfers on the golf course
    • A few hopeful farmers plowing their waterlogged fields
    • The beautiful sound of the crack of the bat as I watched Kyle and the Smithville Smimthies' baseball practice
We're enjoying it while it lasts, knowing we will surely have at least one more good snow before spring is here to stay (and that we'll be sitting through baseball games in the freezing rain).

    Here's today's roundup:

Malaysia garbles Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' lyrics | Los Angeles Times
"Broadcasters in that country have chosen to electronically garble the part of the tune that says, 'No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on the right track, baby.'
One broadcaster said they are being cautious regarding Lady Gaga's lyrics, which promote racial and sexual tolerance, because of government restrictions against airing material that might go against 'good taste or decency or [are] offensive to public feeling.'"
I wonder how many teens are running around singing this song, in its 5th week on the Billboard  Hot 100,   without even knowing what the lyrics are about?  It was featured last night on American Idol, with all the fresh-faced contestants enthusiastically belting it out, while the audience sang along.

House Votes to Defund National Public Radio - FoxNews.com:
"The House of Representatives on Thursday voted 228-192 on a bill to defund National Public Radio, the vast public radio network whose leadership has been questioned after a series of executive decisions about programming, staffing and reporting bias."
See how your representative voted here

This defunding caused Rep. Anthony Weiner to become positively unhinged, unleashing a mocking tirade against the GOP, accusing them of forcing Click and Clack into the unemployment lines.  What Weiner doesn't understand is that we want Click and Clack off the government payroll.  And while we're at it, let's go after PBS and take Big Bird and Curious George off the government payroll too.  Don't worry...if the market demands it, they'll stick around.

    Meanwhile...

"The national debt jumped by $72 billion on Tuesday even as the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government for just three weeks that will cut $6 billion from government spending.

"If Congress were to cut $6 billion every three weeks for the next 36 weeks, it would manage to save between now and late November as much money as the Treasury added to the nation’s net debt during just the business hours of Tuesday, March 15."

Japanese people are setting the example, will the U.S. follow? | iVoters.com - Elaine Merritt
"There has been no surge of lawlessness in Sendai, the Japanese city hit hardest by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake.  For some reason, Japan has proven to be an exception."
"When crises and national disasters happen in the United States, there are usually reports of violence, looting, and incivility as people scramble to survive or even just take advantage of the situation for personal gain. Remember the images from Hurricanes’ Andrew and Katrina when people were stealing TV’s and other electronics?...
"...In the United States, we have always been known for our caring and generosity to others but has something happened to us along the way?  Should a disaster of this magnitude happen here can we say as Japan that violence and incivility will not be the norm?
"Will we continue to see the attitudes of the people displayed in Andrew, Katrina, Wisconsin, and Ohio?
"Will Japan continue to be the world’s exception?"
Sherrod Brown admits free trade in oil will save us (and himself) | RedState
"Senator Sherrod Brown (D) has sure noticed. He’s also noticed that gas prices are going up, and up, and up since Barack Obama took office, skyrocketing from under $2/gal to over $3.50/gal, an increase of about 75%.
"So what does a Democrat (and Daily Kos darling) who has built a career by crusading against international trade do, when his career is on the line in 2012? Why, become a champion of trade, of course...
"Another comes from Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who has urged the State Department to press oil-producing nations to increase their production while the U.S. economy continues to recover from the 2008 financial collapse."
"This is pure hypocrisy on Brown’s part. He’ll prescribe trade restrictions all day and all night; Bush’s bilateral trade juggernaut was slowed up only by Democrat stonewalling in the Senate. But as soon as Brown looks at Kasich, looks at Portman, and realizes he’s the odd man out in 2012, he starts screaming for trade."
Gotta love these election season conversions!

Birther? Potential 2012 Contender Donald Trump Doubts Obama’s Citizenship | The Blaze
“Everybody that even gives a hint of being a birther … even a little bit of a hint, like, gee, you know, maybe, just maybe this much of a chance, they label them as an idiot. Let me tell you, I’m a really smart guy,” he said in the interview, which took place aboard his private plane, Trump Force One.
“I was a really good student at the best school in the country. The reason I have a little doubt, just a little, is because he grew up and nobody knew him.”
Trump went on to say, “When you interview people, if I ever got the nomination, if I ever decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They’ll remember me. Nobody ever comes forward. Nobody knows who he is until later in his life. It’s very strange. The whole thing is very strange.
Irony Alert: Salon points out that a Spy Magazine article quotes a candy store owner from the neighborhood Trump grew up in saying, "I've been running this store for 28 years, and I don't remember him," even though Trump has bragged of being "something of a leader" in his old neighborhood. Hmmmm....

This is so sad. ..Erick Erickson from RedState shared this Twitter exchange tonight.  Personhood Florida is a group working to get a Personhood Amendment on the Florida ballot.  Referring to a human being as an "unwanted growth" as if it were a cancerous tumor, is disgusting.

     Personhood Florida ·

Promoting Personhood of all human beings irrespective of age, race, health, function, condition of dependency. Pro-life, Against Abortion, Prolife, , #912

@ Abortion does not kill children. It removes an unwanted growth. More women have had their lives SAVED by abortion than died.

The person who can rationalize this is a person who needs a lot of prayer.

I agree with Erick.  Sherrie, and other like her, need prayer.  While we can and should work for legislation to stop abortion, ultimately, we need God to change the hearts and minds of people who don't believe in the sanctity of life.

Phil Johnson Tweeted this "Fur Coat"video.  I keep watching the ending and trying to figure out how they did it.
